While the existence of Listed Buildings is well known, less well known is the existence of a similar list of historic gardens, drawn up to designate significant sites and aid their conservation. The Register of Parks and Gardens of special historic interest in England, which is maintained by English Heritage, guides local authorities in planning matters.

There are many parks and gardens in England with historic value, but not all are thought to be of sufficient worth to be included on the national Register. Some of the main considerations for registration are survival, quality and interest of the historic structure. This may relate to the structure of the garden, the character of its planting and to features such as canals and garden buildings.

In matters concerning a garden or park designated grade I or II*, English Heritage will be consulted and will provide appropriate professional advice. The Garden History Society will also be consulted on matters concerning any park or garden on the Register. Local Authorities also routinely have policies that safeguard historic parks and gardens, and these usually emphasize those sites included in the national Register.

As noted, English Heritage will also give advice on aspects of garden conservation, and suggest other sources of guidance, including published work such as:
